Learn how to make convincing, sensitive all prima (single session) portraits that are true to life through a coherent, analytical approach to drawing and painting. Practice and gain confidence in seeing, understanding, and translating visual phenomena to the canvas, while learning the fundamentals of portraiture and oil painting. Through demonstrations, slideshows, and individualized critiques, Philip will introduce a variety of topics, including creating a strong likeness through accurate drawing, understanding value and the effects of light, mixing color, manipulating edges, and understanding cranial structure and anatomy. Using a clear step-by-step process, students will paint the clothed model to complete a single portrait sketch in oil. Students may opt to either work with a full color palette or paint in grisaille.

Cancellations must be emailed to atwoodatelier@gmail.com at least 1 week prior to the first session to receive full credit (valid for 12 months) for a future class OR a refund to the credit card used minus a 15% fee.
